Excel High School Students Help Make Southie Shine
Boston Glob writes... "Students at Excel High School in South Boston were getting dirty Friday as they participated in the school’s Boston Shines activities.
Students mulched trees, planted flowers, and picked up trash around the school and the neighborhood making sure the streets are looking their best for the weekend.
“We want the kids to be involved cleaning up the neighborhood they go to school in,” said Ruthie Aframe, community relations manager for Excel High School. “A lot of our students don’t live here, so it’s good for the neighborhood to see them out helping out and cleaning up.”
Aframe said ownership and creating a connection with the neighborhood was a major part of Friday’s activates.

An Athlete and a Scholar
Boston Partners in Educaton writes "Joseph Francois is truly both an athlete, and a scholar. A native of Haiti, Joseph moved to the United States in elementary school, without knowing any English. Now he is a former basketball player and current member of the Excel High School varsity football team. He’s also taking AP Biology, has completed Honors Chemistry, and is working hard to be on the Honor Roll.

Excel High says Good-Bye to Two Veteran Teachers
In October, two much loved veteran teachers, Mrs. Virginia May and Mr. Sy Clark took done their proverbial shingles and retired from the Boston Public Schools. Both, history teachers, their love of the subject was on par with their passion for teaching. Students will remember Mrs. May for her focus on writing and public speaking. They will remember Mr. Clark for innovative teaching approaches and ability to lecture at length on any historical concept. Both prided themselves on connecting with their students and pushing them to meet expectations that their students did not think they could meet, but they did. And eventually, their students did meet them. Mr. Clark and Mrs. May will be missed by their students and peers.

Robotics
Our wonderful Robotics students have started a livestream of the their
workspace during 6th period. The site is at:
http://www.justin.tv/nkrobotics
Right now we're beta-testing the stream. In addition, we haven't taken the
stream public yet, so there's a key to visit to site. The site key is our
team number: 1754. We usually go live somewhere around 12:45pm and end
streaming at the end of the school day. Past streams can be viewed in the
videos section, and in our forthcoming blip.tv account.
Football
The South Boston Knights won their first home game 18-6 against the Dorchester Bears. The day started with a pep rally that got everyone pumped up! Coach Guthrie and Coach DeMello honored the late Coach Lerro buy retiring his jersey "49" and both coaches spoke fondly of him. They dedicated the first home game to Coach Lerro and declared a tradition will begin that the first home game each year will be a Memorial Coach Lerro Game.
The game attracted over 100 Southie fans and everyone cheered when Reggie Kemp scored on a fumble recovery. James Toles scored on a 6 yard run and Panell Davis scored on an impressive 26 yard run. The offensive line opened up holes to allow James Toles to rush for 100 yards and a touchdown! GO KNIGHTS!!!!
