My name is Julie Fouhy and this is my first year teaching French at Excel High School. I have a B.A in French from the College of the Holy Cross, an M.A. in Romance Languages from Boston College and an M.A.T. from Simmons College. An important milestone in my career was getting a job in here Boston five years ago at the Richard J. Murphy School in Dorchester. I had always wanted to teach in this beautiful city! One goal I have set for myself and for my students this year is that we establish the practice of learning French entirely in French in the classroom. Authentic communication skills develop when students learn to take risks and to accept and work through confusion en route to acquisition of a new language. I would also like to see all of my students sign up for the National French Exam in March in order to measure their skills against students across the country. I’ve taught French for over twenty years to students ranging from pre-K three year olds to college freshman and sophomores. I’ve taught in public schools and private schools, in the suburbs and in the city, in after school programs (Global Child, Inc.) and in study abroad programs (Experiment in International Living). The culturally diverse and international community at Excel High School is an ideal setting in which to learn new languages in the classroom and about world cultures from each other. I am very grateful to be here.
